Why Shivaratri is celebrated has some special significance which many people know about. It is as follows-
During the Rig Vedic period, it has been told in the Puran”s by the Rishis that in the very old times the world was churned. A lot of gods and demons were gathered in the Samudramanthan. There was a lot of time and effort for this sea churning. After the Samudramanthan, different types of elements and fatalities emerged from it which were born out of it for the welfare of the world. The weapon for the gods in the Samudra Manthan, an elephant named Airavat, Kalpavriksha and the most important element in it was nectar and poison. For this nectar and poison, a feeling of jealousy and malice arose in all gods and demons. Due to this, everyone’s relations started to break and fighting started.
In order to solve this problem, everyone compromised among you that you will drink nectar and poison. Because everyone would have been destroyed by drinking poison and if it had fallen on the earth, it would have been destroyed. Similarly, poison was the opposite of all these. Therefore Lord Shiva decided to drink this poison.
On drinking this poison, Shivji’s martio would have happened if that poison had spread in his body, which would have destroyed the whole earth. For this, the gods and demons all this night worked hard to keep Lord Shiva awake. After this, that poison jammed in Lord Shiva’s neck. Due to this, his throat read blue, that is why he was called Neelkanth.
Shivaratri is celebrated and Shivaji’s favorite things are offered to him. On this day, small children also install the idol and Shivling of Shivji for the purpose of worshiping them. This day is celebrated as a national holiday.
On the day of Shivratri, all the Bhakro are given a Prasad of cannabis along with sweets, which they accept with pleasure. Similarly, Shivratri is made happy by doing Jagran, Kirtan all night. This day goes with everyone and this brings happiness in our life too.
