Guru Purnima is one of the most popular and well known festivals that are celebrated in India. This is mainly celebrated by Hindus, Buddhist and Jain religion. Guru Purnima comes on the first full moon day of Asadh month according to Hindi Calendar and according to English calendar in the month of July.

This is the day for students to say thank you to their teachers and to show their respect and appreciation to them. Guru word is taken from the two Sanskrit words, “GU” and “Ru” of which GU means darkness and illiteracy in a person, and the Ru means a person who removes the darkness from that person. Thus, the word Guru means from a person who removes the darkness and ignorance from someone.

Guru Purnima is celebrated to remember the birth of the ancient Sain Vyasa, who wrote four Vedas, eighteen Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata. Because of the name of Saint Vyasa, this day is also called as “Vyasa Purnima.” Whereas Buddhists, on the other hand celebrate this day to show their dignity to their leader Lord Buddha who dispatched their first Sermon on this day at Saranath after having departed from Bodhgaya with 5 of his disciples.
